A Visit to Division 1 and Corey Miceli

Above: Some of the younger crowd at Corey’s Division 1 Gym… I swear, I am trying to figure out what we have been feeding kids these days.  I’m 5’11 and 320!

Corey Miceli and his wife, fitness competitor Kristin Miceli, own Division 1 Gym located at 2017 Granart Rd in Sugar Grove, Illinois.  The trip at 4:15 pm from Lombard to the gym was about 20-25 minutes with relatively light traffic on a cloudy, but warm, Tuesday afternoon.  The location is not too far off of I-88, so I arrived about 4:45 pm, settled in, changed and had a chance to do a nice, light bench workup with the younger raw men and women through until about 6pm when the geared guys showed up.

Corey Miceli (right – spotter) advising the young men in their lifts.  The center lifter benched 315lbs on a standard Olympic bar for a solid three reps.  His raw single is expected to be in the high 300s.

The ladies of Division 1 just warming up with a 53lb competition bar.  They had fun hanging for reps well above 100lbs raw.  The whole time both benches were receiving excellent sage advice from Corey in a relaxed, conversational environment.  Work was happening, weight was moving, motivation was there, and there was no slacking.

At about 6pm they happened.  Corey on the right and Joe Atef on the far left coaching each other and the other benchers in shirts.  Weights floated above 600lbs for the session.  Overkill equipment everywhere.

Overall an excellent visit.  I did a nice light ladder at 225lbs (5 reps to chest then through four boards and back down, no rest, got up to 33 reps), then accessory work in the main gym area.

If you are in the Chicagoland area, I highly recommend the visit!
