About Me!

Devan_Doan_lifting_175Hey everyone! My name is Devan Curley. Most people probably know me as Devan Doan, daughter of the famous Dave Doan! 🙂 I’m so excited and honored to be a part of the Iron Authority team. I love being able to learn from other people involved in the sport. That’s one of the things I love about this sport. The togetherness it promotes is amazing! We are just all one big family! We all feed off of each other and learn from each other. I love that!
I figured I’d start out my first post being a little bit about who I am. Like I said, THE Dave Doan is my dad and also my coach, and the very reason I got involved in powerlifting. I started going to my Dad’s meets when I was 3 years old. I was the little girl that chanted “Go Daddy Go” throughout his entire lift. I still yell that too, I’m just a little older 🙂 I started competing when I was 13 (technically I did my first bench meet at age 9 but it doesn’t really count!) and I haven’t stopped lifting since! I started my life in powerlifting intending on being a bench presser because that is what my dad did. I started lifting because I wanted to make a World Team like my dad so I could go to Europe! My dad, knowing that was my intention, told me I should really try doing 3 lift meets. He thought I would have a better shot at making a World Team sooner for 3 lift as opposed to bench only. When I was that age they didn’t have Sub Jr/Jr Bench Worlds, they only had Sub Jr/Jr Powerlifting Worlds. So I gave it a whirl! I lifted all through high school and my first year of college in both powerlifting and bench press only meets. Much to my dad’s (and my) surprise, my dream came true at age 14. I made my first World Team. I made the OPEN Bench Team at age 14 as the youngest competitor at the Open Bench Worlds from any country ever. So much for making a 3 lift Sub Jr team first! 🙂 I loved powerlifting meets when I did them, and they still hold a special place in my heart. However, bench pressing is my passion so I’ve chosen to continue competing in just bench only meets! So as far as powerlifting goes, in May I’ll be heading to my 11th Bench Press World Championships. I’m a 2 time bronze medalist, 2 time silver medalist and one time gold medal winner at the World Championships. I also have a Silver medal from my stint as a powerlifter at Sub Jr Powerlifting Worlds! I have the World Record in the bench press for Sub Jr and Junior division in the old weight classes. Pretty exciting knowing those records won’t ever be able to be broken! 🙂 I think my favorite part of the sport, besides the competition, is the camaraderie. There are so many amazing people in this sport and I really enjoy all the time spent with them. Powerlifting has provided some really great times with friends from all over the world and has brought my family so incredibly close! My Dad and I are training partners and the best of friends! Very rarely will you see one of us at a meet without the other one nearby. I love the relationship we have. I looked up to him for so long, and couldn’t wait until the day where I could do exactly what he did. I love that now, not only do I get to train with him, he trusts me to help him out, put his shirts on, pick off for him, etc. In fact he even prefers me most of the time!
Outside of powerlifting, I work full time as a Registered Nurse. I work in cardiology and truly love my job! I’m married to my amazing husband Ryan. We got married this past October, so I still think he’s pretty great!  He is not a powerlifter, however I couldn’t ask for a more supportive and loving husband. Who knows, I might still get him on the platform someday! We live in Green Bay, WI and yes, we can almost see Lambeau Field from our house!  We are huge Packer fans and love living in Green Bay (minus all the snow).
All in all, I am so grateful and honored to be sponsored by Iron Authority. I’m looking forward to future posts, and to reading what my other teammates have to say! If you want to read more about me and my life in powerlifting check out the book I wrote and was published while I was in college! http://www.amazon.com/Dream-Big-Journey-Childhood-Reality/dp/1449701310/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1365390048&sr=8-1&keywords=devan+doan

Until next time!
