Atop the podium at the 2012 IPF Jr World Championships

Atop the podium at the 2012 IPF Jr World Championships

Here we are! Only 5 weeks. 5 weeks until I see the benefits of a years’ hard work and dedication to this sport. 5 weeks until the biggest meet of my life. My mind set is still the same. I cannot accept anything other than first place. There is a ton of pressure resting on this meet, considering this will be the first, and last time for a while, that friends and family will be able to come and support me in person. The importance of winning has increased sevenfold due to this and it is really fueling my training.

I am well into my training at this point, and things are going really great. Though the weights are getting increasingly heavier every week, weights are still moving very fast and form is looking great. On my last training update I mentioned my emphasis on strengthening my core, and it is really paying off. My squats are much more upright coming out of the hole, and heavier weights are looking much faster and more efficient than previous years of training. Bench is going great as well, and have yet to touch a weight that has made me struggle yet (knock on wood)! Last week was huge for me, and I hit a monster PR for a double to a 1 board. Unfortunately it is all top secret until after the meet, but stay tuned in to ironauthority.com for my adventures in training in more detail.

The biggest focus in these last few weeks is going to be my deadlift. Everything else is going great and will take care of itself, but the dreaded deadlift is lagging. Hopefully some newer training mechanisms I am going to be implementing will really help it out. I have traditionally NEVER done rack pulls, so I am hoping that although a small change, implementing heavy rack pulls into my routine will better prepare my body to tackle those heavy weights, as well as helping me with my historically horrible lockout.

Winning this meet is all I have thought about since arriving back in the US from last year’s worlds in Sczyrk, Poland. Everything I do from what I eat and when I eat it, when I go to sleep and when I wake up, and passing up the majority of recreational activities to ensure there is no chance of getting injured, has all been for this meet. It’s funny because every year it is the same story. You walk in your house for the first time after worlds and plop down on the couch utterly exhauster and start thinking about whats next. You feel like you have all the time in the world, and the possibilities and gains are endless, only that year goes by faster than you think, and before you know it, you are 5 weeks out from the biggest meet of your life. A feeling of panic comes over me thinking about how little time is actually left, but that is no different from last year, or the year before, or the year before that. I sure have a great group of people in my corner supporting me and guiding me to be the best, and things are surely on track for this to be the best meet of my life. Never have I been more confident in my training, and never have I needed confidence more than now against a stacked weight class and not one, but two elite trained Russian lifters to take on. A lot of work is going to be put in now and then, and writing this is really getting me fired up. It is crazy to think this powerlifting year is nearly up for me, and in 5 more weeks, I start all over again!
