Is there an age limit on working out?

Is there an age limit on working out?

Mar 17, 2015

The long(er) answer with a slight rant included:

I’ve been really sick of people telling me that “You won’t be able to keep this up.”, “Just wait until you’re older.”, or “You won’t be able to lift like this or go so hard then. You’ll slow down.”.

Here’s the deal.  I WILL still go into a gym and kick my own ass.  I WILL do this as long as I am able.  This is a lifestyle.  It’s like being heterosexual –  a lifestyle.  I don’t just stop enjoying men because I get older.  Ok, so maybe that wasn’t the best example.  But you see my point, right?  To the people that enjoy working out – in whatever form that may be – chances are, they are addicted to it and it will be part of their life as long as their body is able.

And guess what?  Get ready for the perks.  It’s like having a Caribou Coffee punch card.  Rewards here I come!  For weight lifting (just talking about what I know, so don’t sue me), it actually HELPS you stay young.  For women especially, I’m not sure if your doctor has let you in on this, but weight lifting (in their terms: weight bearing exercises) strengthens your bones and helps prevent osteoporosis!!  Hello?!  Why wouldn’t you keep doing it for as long as you can?!  And there’s one punch on my rewards card.  Weight lifting also helps increase your flexibility.  Hm.. now, I think that staying flexible would be beneficially in old age.  How many old folks do you see that can hardly get reach to a top shelf or bend over to tie their shoes?  Flexibility is something you definitely want to hold on to later in life.  Another punch on that rewards card.  Lastly, and most obviously, strength!  Do you want to be able to pick up your grandkids without excess strain and struggle?  Do you want to be able to carry your groceries?  Do you want to be able to shovel out your own car when it gets stuck in the Iowa winter snow?!  I do!!  I am too damn independent to get old and decrepit and be dependent on other to do those things for me.  Get out that paper punch and punch my rewards card!!

Short answer: No. 😀

Reference to the video that started my rant:

The old lady in the video kicks ass.  Congratulations to her and I can’t wait until this me!! 🙂
