Josh Hunt Training Log 06MAY13

May 13, 2013

Well I have been back in St. Louis for a few weeks now and training is going decently. I have dropped over ten pounds so the shirt is fitting a little loose and I’ll have to play with it. Basically, I have to decide if I am going to stay in the 264lbs weight class or drop down to 231lbs. I am leaning toward the latter. But, that means cleaning up my diet (yummy raw veggies and more fruit. Yay so much better than a cheesesteak) and retooling my daily routine and workout regiment. I do realize that now that I have put the whole I want to drop weight thing out there I might have jinxed myself and will become a super heavy weight, curses!

Regardless training is going. I need to pull my head out of my ass a bit. I had a hard time checking my ego at the door and ended up trying to lift too much. I need to remember it is just a number. I think it is because Illinois State Powerlifting Meet is the weekend and I want to do well. I am treating this as a tune up meet, but there is always that part of me that really wants to crank it up and do it big.

It was a busy week for me, as it is always. Aside from lifting, working, and doing my day in/day out activities I was able to do and see some interesting things this past week. I spent some time with a close friend and his family talking about life and trying to solve personal and world issues (thanks Brad, Sarah, and Juliana). I ate some good Ethiopian food at Meskerem in the Tower Grove section of St. Louis with a friend (and yes there was even more deep discussion). The Meskerem Comination plate consisted of cabbage, peas, chicken, and two kinds of beef. If you’ve never had Ethiopian food you should, it’s very good and you get to eat with your hands. That’s right no silverware which I find cool.

I went out to Food Truck Friday in Tower Groves Park on you guessed it Friday, with the always fun Scotty. I behaved myself and just had small portions from three food trucks (of course I stole what I could from Scotty). The best truck was Gorilla Street Food. Get the 800 lbs gorilla if you go, to steal right from the website this is what is in this glorious burrito: “combination of chicken adobo and slow roasted pork, calamansi, sriracha, hoisin, fried garlic, paprika creme, greens and black sesame seeds, wrapped in a flour tortilla.” To be honest this was one of the best things I have ever put in my mouth, Scotty ordered it and I was so jealous, seriously, I was pissed at myself for not ordering it. I also hit up Hot Aztec (got the Mole Chicken Taco) and 2 Girls 4 wheel (St. Louis Cheesesteak). Both good, but Gorilla Street Food put the Filipino smack down on everyone else that day. The evening was wrapped up with a visit to Perennial Brewery (the best brewery in St. Louis in my opinion) where I got the #17 or Mint Chocolate Imperial Stout, not my favorite at this place but worth a taste.

Saturday, I went to Taste in the Central West End area of St. Louis with Rob Stewart (Brady’s little big brother, Rob is older but very svelte) and had a small dinner which was outstanding. This place loves its pork, the pork fat corn bread was phinomial and the beet salad was a salad I might choose over some forms of dead animal. Taste was followed by a triple shot of espresso and a show at the Firebird (one of the great St. Louis music venues). The opening act was Royal Thunder, decent sludgy stoner rock/metal from Atlanta with a female lead singer. Always cool to see chicks that are into metal. The Faceless from L.A. followed with their songs about atheism and science set to a melodic deathcore sound track. I’ve seen this band twice and they put on a decent show, I’d recommend going to a show if you like metal. Then the mighty Dillinger Escape Plan (DEP) hit. This is a band to see, seriously the one of the best live acts I’ve ever seen and I go to a lot of shows (they are up there with Every Time I Die and GWAR). I saw them open for Mastodon two years ago and they whipped the crowed into frenzy. Super technical mathcore with so much energy you feel like you just guzzled three red bulls. This is a show to behold, they are amazing musicians that play all over the place but focus on really heavy stuff. If you are interested in DEP check out their song the Widower, it hits all of their notes. If you’re hungry for more listen to Black Bubble Gum and Gold Teeth on a Bum (you’ll thank me, or hate me for wasting your time).

Sunday I spend some time walking around Forrest Park. If you are ever in St. Louis this is a must see, there is so much to do there to include: the St. Louis Zoo, St. Louis Art Museum, the Gem Box and much more. I went to the Missouri History Museum for the first time to check out: The Civil War In Missouri exhibit. All in all I had a good week.
