Quest Weekend 2.0

Quest Weekend 2.0

May 30, 2013

Over the course of Memorial Day weekend and into this week, I have had the honor to train with some of the best young powerlifters in the world. Quest Nutrition holds a strong tradition of some of the best powerlifters to ever take the platform from the USA, and as young developing lifters, my teammates and I hope to uphold the standard of excellence set by the past generation. Great lifters such as Wade Hooper, Tony Cardella, and Brian Siders are Quest Nutrition lifters all of us look up to greatly, and aspire to their levels of greatness. The shoes waiting to be filled are huge, and although there is a lot of work ahead for us to put in, we are up to the challenge.

The weekend’s roster consisted of Brooks Conway, Charlie Conner, Joe Cappellino, Mariah Hamm, James Vang, and myself. There are other great athletes that are part of our team, that unfortunately could not make it. The list of names includes collegiate national champions, national champions, IPF world championship medalists and champions, and record holders from state to world and everything in between. It truly is an honor to be a part of such a talented young team, and have people motivate you and push you to be your best.

The weekend started for me flying into the Atlanta airport early Thursday morning. Later Thursday afternoon 205lb lifter Charlie Conner and SHW Joe Cappellino. Right away, it was obvious the weekend would be filled with tons of laughs and beef jerky, oh yeah and heavy weights! Friday marked the beginning of training for us, and 2013 145lb Collegiate National Champion James Vang and 2012 IPF bronze medalist Mariah Hamm joined us at the legendary Quest gym in Duluth, GA to start off a great weekend of training. There were great lifts all around. I hit a nice 475lb raw double on bench and 405×8 after taking a 3 week break from training. Joe Capp hit an 815lb squat for a triple despite having a painful back injury. Doc Holloway was hitting some nice squats as well on his road to return, along with an easy 530lb squat from Vang and a comeback 600lb double from Brooks Conway.

Saturday was deadlift day for most. It went well for most, and not so well for others. Nagging injuries were bothering a few of us, and after the 2nd day of training the team took off to the lake for some fun in the sun. Some vitamin D and cold water immersion would do us all some good. The best thing about being part of the Quest Athletics team, is that it is more of a family. We are all a really good group of friends, and take some time away from the weight room to clear our mind and have some fun.

We came back monday afternoon to continue the training, and things went great! Big Joe Capp hit a nice 705lb bench press and I moved 5 plates on squat faster than ever, for easy triples. A little time away seemed to help. Charlie Conner did a squat workout with crazy volume, working his way int0 the mid 700s at just over 200lbs BWT. The dude is a machine and makes everything look so easy. Training under one of the best powerlifting coaches ever has been great for all of us. Sherman Ledford provides great motivation, advice and intensity with every rep we do to help us obtain the level of greatness achieved by our quest forefathers. We are all fortunate to have such a supportive sponsor and coach.

All of my teammates have returned back after the weekend, but I am staying another week to get more coaching and training in with the Quest gang. This week has been a great value for me, and a great way to start off training for IPF Junior Worlds over the summer. My training has been set up and planned to  hit a huge total to hopefully earn my 3rd world title. Working with such a great group of lifters is certainly motivating and uplifting. Its great to have the people I have in my corner directing me to become a better lifter. It is an honor to be associated with lifters I consider legends, trained where my legends have trained and coached by the same coach. I am truly blessed and lucky to have the opportunity and help I have. The trip to Quest has been an awesome experience.
